Laminated Wood Flooring

What Is Laminated Wood Flooring?

Laminated flooring imitates traditional hardwood floor boards. They are roughly the same shape and size. The difference being is that laminated flooring is a false wood product that contains layer upon layer of a silicon substance that is sealed through the lamination process. Laminated flooring can not only imitate wood but some retailers offer laminated flooring that imitates stone too.

Why Is Laminated Flooring So Popular?

More and more people are decorating their homes with laminated flooring. There are several factors why people choose Columbia Wood Flooring over the traditional hardwood floor. Laminated flooring is a lot easier to install, it is easier to maintain, it costs a lot less than traditional flooring, it is very durable and in some cases very hygienic. Some manufacturers use an antimicrobial resin as a lamination resin.

Installation Of Laminated Flooring

Laminated flooring was manufactured with the DIY homeowner in mind. Laminated floors are a series of floorboard planks that fit together using the tongue and groove process. Sometimes with a self-adhesive backing. Laminated flooring in some countries is better known as floating floors. This is because laminated floors float on top of a specific underlay which is usually manufactured from foam and its main purpose is to provide noise reduction. All baseboards around the room of the installation must be removed before installation of the floor. It can be reattached again after the installation. Bad installation can result in gaps between the boards. This is where two boards that should be locked together using their tongue and groove have separated. The installation is so easy that even if you hire a professional to install it, the cost will be far less than the installation of a traditional hardwood floor.

Caring For Your New Floor

Over time the surface of laminated floors can get scratched. You have to make sure that the floor is always kept clean of dust and gritty particles. Some owners of floors think that just because the floor has a water-resistant coating, they can swamp the floors with water. It is not advised to attempt this as the boards can swell, sometimes warp, leaving your floor useless and you losing money. Warranties should always be read carefully and adhered to on any product(s) that you purchase. In this particular case the warranty on your floor will not cover swamped floors caused by your own negligence. Laminated floors must be kept dry. The water resistant coating is only for the protection of spills, as long as they are taken care of immediately and not left for long periods to soak into the boards. If boards become separated over time, you should tap them back together so dirt cannot get into the gaps. If this happens it will be a lot harder if not impossible to rejoin the boards.
